Historically, the most star-studded bash held during the Cannes Film Festival is always the Cinema Against Aids amfAR fundraiser. This year, the exclusive black-tie event will be held on May 24 at the Hotel du Cap in Antibes. Past attendees include: Elton John, Sean Penn, Johnny Depp, George Clooney Madonna, Catherine Deneuve, Kylie Minogue, Natalie Portman, Elle Macpherson, Valentino, Roberto Cavalli, Bill Clinton and Prince Albert of Monaco.

ut Prince Albert and Clinton are throwing their own high-rolling contender on the Cannes party scene. Their first annual “Nights in Monaco” gala will be held at Monaco’s Hotel de Paris to benefit the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation and the William J. Clinton Foundation.

“I am glad that my Foundation is joining with the Prince Albert II of Monaco Foundation,” Clinton said in a statement. “I have enjoyed working with Prince Albert through my Clinton Global Initiative, and we share a deep commitment to protecting the environment. And though she recently returned to photography in the series “Book of Kings,” which premiered at Gladstone Gallery in January, she’s since thrown herself into video with renewed fervor. She’s about to leave for a six-month shoot in Egypt, where she’s making her second feature film about the singer Umm Kulthum, and she had just finished shooting footage for a short video starring Natalie Portman.

“This was an idea I pulled from one of my dreams,” Neshat said of the as yet untitled work-in-progress, from which she showed still images. In the video, shot in the artist’s trademark high-contrast black and white, Portman follows a mysterious male figure along a windswept beach and then inland to a mysterious mansion, which turns out to be a manifestation of her own psyche in which she becomes lost and has to escape. She didn’t reveal much more about that piece — neither its title, nor a potential completion date.

Pressed by someone in the audience on the difference between feminism in the Middle East and North America, Neshat offered: “The generation of women in Iran today are of a different kind. They are highly educated, and that education has given them the ability to survive in a society that has pushed them against a wall”… More here
